I made the mistake of doing this and ended up inviting departments that I didn't work in. Needless to say that most of the people that I invited rsvp'd and didn't bother to show up. It was a costly mistake.
Its not just about talking about the wedding to people you may not invite its just unprofessional. At the workplace you don't want your time sidetracked by someone discussing in detail each aspect of their home renovations or latest vacation. In turn no one should have to hear about your wedding plans. Even if you are inviting everyone your time at work should be spent working.
